Fangirl is the story of a girl named Cath. Cath is a super fan of a fantasy book series, Simon Snow. She spends her time immersed in the fandom, in chat rooms, reading and rereading the books, and of course writing her own fan fiction based on the story.
When Cath and her twin sister Wren go off to college Wren slips away from the fandom and wants to live a more separated life from Cath. She wants to make new friends and experience life without just being another one of the twins. Cath however doesn't see the point of changing who she is and meeting new people. So she spends all of her time, when not in classes, in her room writing her fan fiction and doing her homework. Until she starts to have feelings for a boy who may or may not be 100% available.
I really loved Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I have yet to read a book by Rowell that I haven't like, if not absolutely love! I related very much to our main character Cath. I myself belong to many fandoms, and I too love to spend my free time cuddled up in bed with a book.
I also loved the love interest in the story. It wasn't the usual girl meets boy and her whole outlook on life changes the instant she looks into his eyes. The relationship really takes the whole book to fully develop. Also Cath starts to realize her feelings after being disappointed by a different potential boyfriend. I really liked that it wasn't the first guy she met and had feelings for. I'm not saying I hate instalove, sometimes it does work well in a story, but the amount of books I have read lately that literally the second chapter in the main character is declaring the eternal love to someone. The love interest of Caths really had to put in some work to win Cath over.
I also really liked Cath's roommate. She was a spitfire, spunky, girl! I loved her honesty and blunt way of speaking. All the characters just seemed so real. And the added family drama was a nice change. I don't particularly love when characters go off to college and you hear nothing else about their parents or any of the family that they leave behind at home. Caths father reminded me a lot of family issues that I have had in the past and it was refreshing to read about a character who was going through something that I once went through. Again, I really connected with Cath on so many levels.
I gave Fangirl a 5 out of 5 stars and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a light-ish contemporary read.
